Gilt Edges at Pemberton & Holt
≈ 6 min
On 18 September 2026, retired schoolteacher Margaret Osei purchased what she was told was an authentic 1922 Boni & Liveright first edition of 'The Waste Land' from Pemberton & Holt for £14,200. When she showed the volume to a friend, suspicions were raised about the paper and typeface. An independent examiner subsequently declared the book a high-quality forgery. Gerald Holt insists he acquired the book in good faith from a private estate and relied on an in-house provenance check. The question before you is whether Holt knew, or should have known, that the volume was not genuine before placing it in the vault and selling it at the premium price.
