Frayed Lines at Gannet Wharf

≈ 4 min

At approximately 04:40 on 29 September 2026, Oran Quine found his gill-net floats slashed across all thirty yards — a clean, methodical cut that marine equipment surveyor Ros Hendry later described as requiring a hooked blade and at least fifteen minutes of uninterrupted work. Quine and Calloway have a known dispute over a shared berth, and Quine immediately named Calloway as the only man with a grudge and the right tools. The prosecution contends that Calloway crossed the quay from Berth 4 to Berth 2 between 04:20 and 04:50, carried out the sabotage, and returned before anyone could see him. The jury must determine whether the evidence supports that account.

Subject

Pete Calloway, crew hand aboard the trawler Steadfast, moored at Berth 4

Charged with Sabotage — deliberately slashing the gill-net floats on rival fisherman Oran Quine's trawler Silver Maid, rendering the net unusable for the morning tide on 29 September 2026

The scene

Gannet Wharf Fishing Co-operative, a working harbour on the Northumbrian coast, present day — comprising six trawler berths, a net-mending shed, a co-op weighing office, and a locked fuel store at the end of the quay.

The witnesses

  • Oran Quine — Owner and skipper of the Silver Maid, Berth 2
  • Mira DeLacy — Independent harbour-master's night-watch assistant, contracted by the Port Authority
  • Ben Sully — Net-mending shed keeper and co-op equipment manager
  • Diane Hess — Early-rising fish wholesaler who parks her van at the top of the harbour road
