The Purloined Gambits of Cavendish House
≈ 6 min
On the morning of Saturday 19 July 2026, club steward Renata Osei arrived at Cavendish House at 07:15 to prepare for the club's annual Junior Grading Tournament. She found the staff-room door closed but unlocked. Inside, the filing cabinet containing the sealed examination papers for the day's junior grading rounds had been opened, and paper sets for all three rounds were missing. The papers had been printed and sealed on Thursday evening by examination director Clifford Marne. A junior tournament entry covers players at all grade levels from beginner through advanced. Your task is to profile the behaviour of the person or persons who removed the papers — not to name them.
The scene
Cavendish House Chess Club — a private members' club occupying a Victorian townhouse on Aldermere Street, comprising a ground-floor playing salon, a first-floor committee room, and a locked staff room used by the club's examination director during rated-tournament weekends.
