The hydraulic sealer on Veldstone Cooperative's canning line — a Praxton Mark IV press used to crimp lids onto jars of damson preserve — was found inoperative on the morning of Friday, 22 July 1983, its pressure regulator valve deliberately blocked with a wad of rye-grass packing cord. Line supervisor Agnes Holst believes the machine was sabotaged some time after the last verified good run.
