Cellar Notes at Maison Perret

≈ 6 min

The Grand Jury of the Pays d'Auge Fromage Concours has disqualified Maison Perret's entry — wheel MPN-4, a raw-milk Livarot — after judge Colette Renard noticed that two wheels in the cellar's competition rack had been silently swapped before judging. Cellar master Édouard Perret insists no one touched the rack after the official intake, but the physical evidence suggests otherwise. Investigator Sylvie Morel has been asked to establish the exact sequence of events that rigged the competition: who moved which wheel, and when, relative to the cellar's other documented moments that day.

The scene

Maison Perret, a three-generation farmhouse cheese aging cellar carved into a chalk hillside in Normandy, France, present day

The events

  • Substitute wheel carried into the cellar
  • Judge Renard conducts her preliminary tasting and notices the discrepancy
  • Wheel MPN-4 turned and salted during morning rounds
  • MPN-4 recovered from the preparation shelf with a drying rind half
  • Competition intake form signed and competition rack sealed
  • Rack seal broken and wheels exchanged in slot 3-C
