The Westbound Raffle
≈ 4 min
The Portallen Summer Gala committee runs an annual charity raffle in the ferry terminal waiting hall, with tickets drawn live before passengers board the westbound crossing to the islands. This year's first-prize ticket — No. 0047 — belongs to committee treasurer Ruaridh Speir, who submitted it after the drum was officially sealed. Investigator Fiona Calder has been asked to reconstruct the exact sequence of events that led to the drum being tampered with, using the evidence left at the scene.
The scene
Portallen Ferry Terminal waiting hall, a 1970s concrete passenger building on the west coast of Scotland, housing a public notice board, a coin-operated hot-drinks machine, and a glass-fronted prize draw drum kept behind the ticket desk
The events
- Winning ticket drawn before the morning crossing
- Draw drum sealed with numbered security tag
- Drum access latch opened and extra ticket inserted
- Ticket batch sorted and verified by committee
- Replacement security tag identified as committee stock
- Speir enters the terminal via the vehicle ramp
