The Farside Fence Run

4 min

After the fourth race at Dunmarrow, stable hand Conal Feeney was found inside the locked weighing room with the day's purse ledger missing. Feeney himself was gone by the time stewards arrived — but the route he took out of the enclosure was not. Investigator Áine Mulcahy has been asked to reconstruct, in order, the six stages of Feeney's getaway from the evidence left along the way. She must work from mud traces, paper fragments, and biological signs alone — no witness account is reliable.

The scene

Dunmarrow Racecourse — weighing room, paddock tunnel, and the eastern perimeter fence line, rural Ireland, 1963

The events

  • Feeney is spotted crossing the open paddock
  • Feeney clears the perimeter fence and drops onto the lane
  • Feeney slips into the weighing room through the side vent
  • The torn ledger sleeve is found at the drainage ditch
  • Feeney shelters in the hay store off the paddock tunnel
  • The purse ledger is removed from the clerk's cabinet
