On a Wednesday afternoon, postal inspector Harriet Calne was called to Wychcroft Village Post Office after a parcel of antique coin catalogues — insured, registered, destined for a dealer in Bristol — arrived at its destination stuffed with crumpled newsprint. Postmistress June Aldred insists the parcel left her care intact. The sorting room has yielded six distinct events that must have occurred between Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning, but their true sequence is disputed. Inspector Calne needs to establish the precise order to determine when the switch was made and prove it was no accident.
