On the night of Wednesday, 13 August 1952, a quantity of uncut gemstones was moved through Hartwell Central Telephone Exchange by a person with inside access — concealed inside a cable-spool casing. Senior engineer Doris Vane discovered the abandoned casing in the roof cable gallery at the start of the Thursday morning shift. The question put to the investigating constable is not who was responsible, but in what order did the night's events unfold — six moments whose sequence the physical traces alone can fix.
