The Crane Operator's Confession

9 min

Senior crane operator Desmond Holt was found slumped at the controls of Crane 4's elevated cab at Port Salwick on a Tuesday morning, apparently the victim of a deliberate act. Dock security supervisor Marta Jelinek has been placed at the scene, but her account of her own movements contradicts the physical evidence. Investigators must reconstruct the six key events of that morning — in their true sequence — to establish when each party was where, and to expose the one reversal that changes everything.

The scene

Harbour crane operator's cabin and the wharf below, Port Salwick Industrial Docks, northern England, present day

The events

  • Holt is found slumped at the crane controls
  • A coal-barge is unloaded at Berth 7 directly beneath Crane 4
  • Investigators recover a chalk-mark register page from the cab
  • Holt carries out a pre-shift inspection of the crane cab
  • Jelinek files an incident report at the dock security office
  • Jelinek visits the crane cab, claiming to check a maintenance log
