On the morning after Pellegrini's Circus gave its Tuesday performance, properties manager Dottie Crane found the strongbox inside the dressing wagon broken open and the week's gate receipts gone. Suspicion fell on Silvano Reyes, the circus's knife-thrower, who was known to have quarrelled bitterly with owner Marco Pellegrini over unpaid wages.
