The Phantom of the Loft

4 min

On the morning of Thursday, 16 July 2026, stage manager Corinne Feld discovered that the Aldermere Concert Hall's historic Brauer pipe organ had been deliberately sabotaged: three tin-alloy front pipes had been removed and replaced with painted cardboard replicas. The real pipes — each worth several thousand pounds — were gone. Organ technician Felix Cray, the only person with loft access, was found locked inside the maintenance corridor, claiming he had been there all night performing an authorised tuning. Investigators must reconstruct the exact sequence of six events to determine how the theft was staged.

The scene

The events

  • Cardboard replicas are slotted into the display rack
  • Cray re-enters the loft and locks the maintenance corridor door from inside
  • Felix Cray signs the loft access log at the stage door
  • An unmarked van collects the pipes from the loading bay
  • Cray removes the three Brauer front pipes and wraps them in felt blankets
  • The service lift carries the felt-wrapped pipes to the loading bay
