The Carved Knight Goes Home
≈ 9 min
The Thornbury Autumn Congress fields its prize on a velvet stand in the trophy alcove: the Marchetti Knight, a hand-carved boxwood chess knight donated by the hall's founder in 1958 and awarded to the open-section winner each year. Between the lunch adjournment and the 2 PM prize presentation, the carved knight was lifted from its stand and a glossy resin replica left in its place. Four people had free run of the alcove during the break; one of them walked out with the original.
