The Wrong Shade of Cadmium
≈ 6 min
The Tidewell Riverside Gallery opens 'Coastal Light: The Marsh Paintings of Olive Carden' in three days, and its anchor work — Carden's 1931 'Estuary at Dusk', lent by a private collector — hung on the North Hall wall by Wednesday evening. During Thursday's conservation check the varnish fluoresced wrong under the UV lamp: the canvas is a modern copy, the genuine panel nowhere in the hall. Someone swapped a known fake onto the wall and signed off on it as authentic. Find who placed it.
Subject
'Estuary at Dusk' (1931)
Olive Carden's signature marsh panel, insured at £180,000, replaced on the wall by a competent modern forgery painted in pigments too new for 1931.
The suspects
