Halvard & Daughters enters one loaf each year in the Harvest Fair's heritage-bread class, and this morning's entry — a sourdough baked from the family's 1911 starter — is due at the fairground by 6 AM. At 4:40 AM head baker Ingrid Halvard cut the presentation loaf and found a pale, quick-yeast crumb where the dense sour crumb should be: the prize loaf is a store-bought fake, dressed in the bakery's stamped crust. Someone swapped the real entry and passed the imposter as genuine. The question before dawn is who dressed it and set it on the rack.
