At 7:22 AM, the 7:05 Eastfield Express stalled on a signal fault between Crestmoor and Dunvale stations. While passengers sat waiting, retired schoolteacher Mabel Osgood discovered that her enamel lark pin — a 1962 Guild of Naturalists presentation piece, pinned to the lapel of her overcoat hanging in the overhead rack — had been unclipped and pocketed. The pin is small, light, and would fetch a tidy sum at specialist auction. Only four passengers occupied Carriage C's rear section, separated from the rest of the train by a stuck sliding door.
