Weighed and Found Wanting

4 min

At 5:55 PM, market manager Petra Vance discovered that the brass competition scale — a 120-year-old balance loaned by the Greystone Agricultural Society for today's Best Harvest weigh-in — was missing its set of six brass counterweights, rendering the contest result uncertifiable. The scale sits in the open-sided Judging Tent at the market's north end, and the counterweights were present at the 4:00 PM weigh-in. Someone removed them in the final hour of trading.

Subject

Greystone Agricultural Society

The Society loans its antique competition scale each year to certify the Best Harvest prize. Without the counterweights, this year's contest — and the £500 prize — cannot be officially awarded, casting doubt on the runner-up's narrow loss.
