Something Fishy in Tank Seven
≈ 4 min
At 6:15 PM, aquarium keeper Priya Osman discovered that the preserved nautilus shell specimen — a genuine 1887 Challenger Expedition sample in a sealed acrylic display block — had been swapped for a convincing painted resin replica. The original is worth upward of $18,000 and was the centrepiece of tonight's VIP behind-the-scenes tour. Four people had access to the wet-lab prep room where the block was stored before the tour.
Subject
Priya Osman
Senior aquarium keeper responsible for specimen loans and the VIP tour programme. She signed the block in from the collections vault that morning and noticed the swap when she lifted it to wipe the base — the replica is 40 grams lighter than the original.
