The Germination Ledger

≈ 4 min

Vault archivist Signe Roos arrived on Monday morning to find the newest ledger page defaced: every entry scratched out except for a single coded line pressed flat beneath the weighing-scale pan, held there by a dried sprig of meadow rue. The sprig is from a species not listed in any current intake — it has no business being here at all.

The scene

Thorndale Botanical Seed Vault, cataloguing room — a narrow room lined with climate-controlled drawers where incoming seed parcels are weighed, tagged, and entered in hand-ruled ledgers before transfer to the deep-cold chambers

Possible authors

  • Marta Vasova — Seed Intake Technician
  • Felix Dorn — Climate Systems Engineer
  • Orin Sveti — Botanical Research Liaison
  • Hildur Breck — Vault Security Officer
