The Rind Reads Backwards
≈ 9 min
When head cheesemaker Bram Aurel descended into the cave at dawn to record the monthly rind inspection, he found a cloth label stripped from a prize reserve wheel and a short message pressed onto its blank reverse, wedged back beneath the wheel's edge as if to hide it. The label bore no initials, no date, and no wax seal — only the encoded text and a faint smell of spruce resin.
The scene
Fromagerie Aurel — the aging cave, a sandstone cellar carved beneath a mountain dairy, where wheels of pressed alpine cheese rest on spruce shelves tagged with cloth labels, and a copper humidity dial ticks above the iron entrance gate
