The Helmsman's Burden
≈ 4 min
When first mate Saoirse Dunne climbed to the wheelhouse at dawn to prepare for the morning run, she found the captain's logbook removed from its hook and the radio set left open on a frequency no one had filed. Wedged beneath the ship's wheel spoke was a folded strip of waxed paper bearing a short coded message, held in place by a compass needle someone had removed from the binnacle.
The scene
Fishing trawler wheelhouse, MV Corella — the cramped upper cabin where the ship's wheel, radio set, and navigation charts are bolted down, and a brass hook above the chart table holds the captain's logbook
