The Reed Bed Riddle

≈ 4 min

When warden Sylvie Oakes arrived to unlock the Fenwick Marsh hide for the morning group, she found the spotted-owl logbook turned to a fresh page and a short note wedged beneath the brass bolt of peg number three. The note was written in block capitals, yet it made no sense as ordinary English.

The scene

Birdwatching hide at Fenwick Marsh Wetland Reserve — the narrow timber observation shelter overlooking the main reed bed, where binoculars hang on numbered pegs and a spotted-owl logbook sits chained to the central bench.
