Apprentice typesetter Rory Finch arrived before dawn to lay out the morning broadsheet and found the composing stone swept bare, every stick of set type scattered across the floor. Wedged between the ink roller and its handle was a small folded note, its letters pressed into the paper with the force of someone in a hurry.
