The Galley Proof Ghost
≈ 4 min
Senior pressman Odell Crane unlocked the ink-mixing room at half past five to find the Bramwell house formula book missing from its locked tin and a strip of typesetter's paper rolled tight around a small ink roller, left balanced on the marble slab. The message pressed into the paper is still legible, inked directly from the roller in mirror-black.
The scene
Bramwell & Pitch Fine Press, ink-mixing room — the low-ceilinged alcove behind the main composing floor where pigment tins are racked on iron shelves, a marble slab holds the day's ink batches, and the air smells permanently of linseed and lamp-black.
