The Reed Bed Reckoning
≈ 6 min
Reserve warden Greta Sollis opened hide three at dawn and found the official species log missing from its pin — replaced by a single folded note wedged into the slit-window ledge, its edges damp with marsh mist. The note appears to have been left deliberately, as if the author expected it to be found by someone who would understand it. What it means, and who wrote it, is now the question.
The scene
Harwick Wetlands Nature Reserve — birdwatching hide number three, a weathered timber structure on stilts above the reed beds, fitted with slit-windows, a fold-down bench, and a species log pinned to the inside wall
