The Frozen Ledger
≈ 9 min
When parlour owner Cressida Vane arrived before opening on Friday morning, she found the tin safe left ajar and the parlour's secret flavour-development notebook missing from inside it. Wedged beneath a tub of maraschino cherries on the desk was a short handwritten note, its letters grouped into neat five-character blocks as though by someone who took pride in precision.
The scene
Scoopwell's Ice Cream Parlour, Hartbury — the back office behind the serving counter, a narrow room with a stainless-steel desk, a wall-mounted flavour board covered in chalk tallies, and a battered tin safe bolted to the skirting board
