The Gilded Spoke
≈ 6 min
On Sunday morning, head restorer Odelia Marsh unlocked the granary to find the master paint ledger missing from its iron hook and a single strip of brown wrapping paper nailed to the centrepiece spindle of the half-assembled carousel, pressed flat with a finishing nail. The strip bore seven words in neat block capitals — and nobody could say when it had been put there.
The scene
Fenwick Cross Fairground, the disused granary building repurposed as a carousel restoration workshop — a high-raftered space where carved wooden horses hang from ceiling hooks on chains, paint-speckled drop cloths cover the floor, and the smell of linseed oil and sawdust fills the air.
Possible authors
- Odelia Marsh — Head restorer, Fenwick Cross Carousel Project
- Rafe Tulliver — Mechanical engineer, carousel drive mechanism
- Sanna Beckwith — Pigment specialist and lead painter
- Patrice Doyle — Fairground historian and project archivist
