The Unanswered Extension
≈ 4 min
Head telephonist Wren Cassidy arrived for the early shift to find her colleague's headset dangling from the cord and the evening's call-slips scattered across the floor. Beneath the spike where completed slips are filed, she found a single folded card face-down, its corners pressed flat under a heavy bakelite handset that nobody had returned to its cradle.
The scene
Grand hotel switchboard room, Aldermoor Palace Hotel — the cramped mezzanine cubicle where a brass-panelled PBX switchboard fills one wall, paper call-slips are spiked on a brass pin, and a row of extension lamps glow amber in the half-dark
