The Waxed Lining
≈ 9 min
Chalet host Mireille Voss was straightening the drying rack before the afternoon ski session when she noticed locker seven standing ajar and a thin strip of paper tucked into the toe-box of a child's ski boot, folded twice and sealed with a smear of base-coat ski wax. The note carries no signature and no date — only a short run of capital letters that mean nothing at face value.
The scene
Ski chalet boot room, Montferret Alpine Lodge — the low-ceilinged alcove where sixteen pairs of ski boots line the heated drying rack, wax blocks and scrapers crowd the workbench, and a pegboard of locker keys hangs beside the fire-exit door
