The Net Mender's Warning

6 min

Harbour patrol officer Saoirse Mull boarded the Cormorant's Wake at dawn after the vessel failed to radio in from its overnight mooring. She found the wheelhouse undisturbed except for one detail: a strip of net-mending twine had been threaded through a folded note and knotted around the throttle lever. The note was written in a careful, deliberate hand.

The scene

Fishing trawler wheelhouse, harbour of Duncray Cove — the cramped helm deck of the trawler Cormorant's Wake, where charts are rolled in brass tubes above the binnacle and the log book hangs on a brass hook beside the wheel.
