The Lever Frame Dispatch
≈ 4 min
When relief signaller Dot Purvis climbed the wooden stairs of Creswick Junction's signal box at six in the morning, she found the token machine unplugged and a folded slip of paper wedged beneath the largest lever in the frame. The note was written in a neat hand, but the words made no immediate sense.
The scene
Railway signal box, Creswick Junction — the narrow upper room where a row of iron levers controls the points and signals along three converging lines.
