During the lunch break of the Thornwick Hillclimb's centenary rally, scrutineer Dot Fenwick noticed the timekeeper's caravan door swinging open and the rally's master entry ledger missing from its hook. Wedged under the windscreen wiper of a 1931 Bentley parked alongside was a strip of paper bearing a line of capital letters — pressed there deliberately, since no wind had blown all morning.
The scene
Vintage car rally paddock, Thornwick Hillclimb Circuit — the timekeeper's caravan parked behind the scrutineering bay
