The Reed Bed Reckoning
≈ 9 min
At dawn, reserve warden Cassie Obi opened the birdwatching hide to prepare for the morning survey group and found the sighting log book shoved off its shelf and a folded card wedged into the slat gap beside the viewing window. The card bore a short sequence of uppercase letters pressed firmly in ink, as though written in a hurry.
The scene
Fernmoor Wetland Reserve — the birdwatching hide at the edge of the reed bed, a timber-slatted shelter overlooking the main marsh
