When the circus groundskeeper unlocked the prop wagon at dawn to inventory the off-season equipment, he found a folded note pinned beneath the crystal ball with a costume-repair needle. The note was addressed to no one, but its meaning, once decoded, would explain why the circus's prized mechanical elephant had been dismantled overnight.
