The Glaze-Cost Return of Longyao Kiln
≈ 9 min
Overseer Pei Chengzhi has submitted to the Bureau of Works his autumn quarter cost return for Longyao Kiln, listing the quantity and purchase price of each raw material consumed in producing the period's celadon and jun-ware output. The Bureau holds independent supplier receipts, a weight-and-measure register, and a standing tariff circular fixing approved unit prices for each mineral. The auditor must determine whether any line of the return misstates a cost in a way that would allow the overseer to pocket the difference from treasury disbursements.
The scene
Longyao official kiln complex, Hebei prefecture, Song dynasty China, autumn 1150
